An explanation
“On a camping trip in year 11 to the Badger Creek Caravan Park I watched my friend catch a fish from the caravan park dam. As it flopped on the rotting wooden jetty (long since replaced), I improvised the last moments of the fish’s life on the black steel string acoustic guitar that I had just bought at the Healesville op shop for $40. I still have the guitar. For some reason I had engraved pentagrams into the back of it while in school.”

“Andrew, the friend who caught the fish, had always been very encouraging of me playing this style of music. Over the years he has been pretty much the only person I have given recordings of this sort of stuff to, although all of my other albums usually have a few solo guitar instrumentals on them and I play some of them at most solo gigs.”

Huge thanks to Andrew Oakley (for inspiration and encouragement), Lauren Danaher, Stevie P Sterling, Justin Rudge (mastered and delivered to my door!!) All the Dallas dudes, The Dixon’s dudes, my lovely friends and family (way too many to list although David Parker and Helen Rowe deserve a special mention for being at most gigs). Thanks heaps to Triple R and PBS, especially Richard Watts and David Heard

A combination of influences that culminates in a sound that is unique and yet has a familiarity that is appealing. A guitar that can at times sound like three guitars and melodic vocals and harmonica that weave in and out of the guitar lines creating an intriguing sound that gains more depth with each subsequent listen. Ryan's latest album, Specks of Golden Dust is available via Half A Cow ... more
